Choosing the Perfect Venue
Choosing a venue is a bit like dating — some places look good online but turn out to be total heartbreakers in person. Fear not! We’re here to guide you through venue considerations, complete with wisdom and a sprinkle of reality checks.
1. The "Fairy Tale" Trap
We get it — that castle venue looks amazing on Instagram. Don’t let dreamy photos cloud your judgment, some venues need A LOT of work or are simply not practical for your vision.
Questions: Is it within driving distance for guests, or are you secretly planning a road trip-themed wedding? Does the venue come with heating, or will your guests turn into stylish icicles by dessert? Will there be sufficient time for decorating and cleanup? Are there decoration guidelines/restrictions? Is there accommodation? Where are the nearest hotels? Are you equipped for a DJ? Band? Are there any columns or obstructions in the room that will block guest’s views? How many events might be happening on the same day? Do you provide any type of music or sound system? What type of electricity and power are available?
2. Bathrooms: The Overlooked VIP
You may be envisioning twinkling lights and flower walls, but what about...the loo? If your guests have to hike half a mile or navigate a rickety staircase to find relief, you might as well hand out compasses as wedding favors.
Questions: How many bathrooms are available? Do we need to rent portable bathrooms?
3. The "Weather Roulette" Dilemma
Outdoor weddings are stunning — until Mother Nature RSVP's with her own thunderous entrance. Check if your venue has a solid backup plan, and remember: "We can move the party inside!" sounds better than "I do" in a downpour. A tent is not a backup plan — it's a wind-blown parachute waiting to happen.
Questions: What is the weather plan for outdoor spaces?
4. Parking
If your guests need a treasure map to find parking, you may need to rethink the logistics. No one wants to start the night sweaty and stressed from a 20-minute parking quest. Offering a shuttle service is a classy move, if it’s within your budget — and a great way to ensure your guests aren’t calling for a tow truck mid-reception.
Questions: Is there enough parking for all guests? Is it free parking? Is the location accessible by limo or shuttle buses?
5. Fees and…More Fees?
Oh, you thought the venue cost included tables, chairs, and lights? Nope — apparently, those are "extras." Ask about fees upfront unless you enjoy surprises that feel like credit card nightmares.
Questions: What packages or time slots are available? What exactly is covered in the cost of the space? What deposit is required & schedule of payments? Is there a fee if the reception goes over the scheduled allotted time? Is there a min or max rental time? Do you provide the chairs? Set up? Are linens, china, chairs, tables, silverware, etc. included in the basic cost? What style and size? Is Set-up and break-down included in the fees? Is waiting staff included?
6. The "Noise/Alcohol Curfew" Curveball
You want your guests to dance like no one's watching — but some venues enforce curfews stricter than a high school prom chaperone. If your venue insists the party ends at 9 p.m., it might be time to keep looking (unless you’re into brunch weddings — in which case, mimosas all around!).
Questions: Are there restrictions on when the music must stop? What is the alcohol policy or rules?
7. Does It Work For Your Guests?
Before locking in your venue, you must consider how your guests move around. Is it comfortable or will they be sardines? Or perhaps lost in an empty room? Are there separate areas for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception (if that’s what you want)?Where will the catering, cocktail, or restroom lines form? Will the bar crowd cover the dance floor or the entrance? Create your guest list first, then look for appropriately sized venues.
Questions: What is the maximum capacity of the site? Is the venue handicap accessible?

What is the cancellation policy?
What security services are offered?

Will the ceremony and reception be at the same location?

Who will be preparing the house before the event?
